Spread the message (Facebook App idea)

June 17, 2007

I bought the domain spreadthemsg.com about a year ago for a commercial/social advertising business idea I had (and scrapped). GoDaddy.com has reminded me that my one year is about to expire soon — that put the idea “spread the message” back into my head.

When you think about it - It’s pretty hard to get “any” message out to the masses these days. You can stand in the center of town and yell and scream at people but it doesn’t work - you’re just bugging them. Same with ads and crap, nobody cares - they just ignore it. How then does an idea/belief/product spread? It has to somehow right? I’m no big city intellectual type but I think it’s through friends and trusted connections. Any viral message / idea / whatever always goes through friends and friends of friends.

How about a Fasebook Application that lets users define a message, it could be “Hey go to my website” or “Impeach Bush”, “Vote for Ron Paul” or even “I like kittens”. It then gets displayed on their profile. Friends of this user can see the message and choose to replicate it to their own profile (aka. spread it) or maybe type in a message they believe in more.

What if the “spreadthemessage” sites front page had a nice big bar graph that showed how many millions of people were agreeing on what message? Either your shrugging and saying “so what?” or you’re freaking out about the potential of this causing some huge social change. This would streamlines things — kind of like a peer-to-peer gut check from the community.

I’m 3x overcommited right now - so how about you build this? If it gets huge, buy me a Ferrari as a thank you! :)
