I’d like to announce the Ottawa branch of TownRenowned.com.
TownRenowned (TR) is designed to show the best and worst places to eat, things to do and places to party in a given city. Users can vote up or down anything they have experienced. These votes then get mashed together into the “renowned” score (up votes minus down votes) and this is how things get sorted. This is designed to expose the gems a city has to offer.
However it’s not just about the popular places, it’s about finding new things too. By using tagging, items get tied together in very interesting ways. Like the best place for a five dollar lunch, or bars with Foosball tables or free activities.
Tagging leads to my favorite feature – the Google map integration. When you click on “view large map” for every item, TR shows a Google map of the region /w the top three items for every related tag along with the initial item you were looking at. Eventually when a region is full of voted items you will discover new and interesting places nearby your initial destination.
I want to take a moment to thank Matt Brett, the designer of look and feel for this website. Matt did a great job of interpreting my requirements and he also took some real initiative and suggested some changes that blew me away. If you’re just checking this out because you’re a fellow entrepreneur – you should consider hiring him!
There you have it! If you are a local resident of Ottawa or if you have visited Ottawa I invite you to create an account to vote on and submit things that you really love (or hate)!
P.S check out my profile while you’re at it.
