Digg.com = Online Sneezing

June 28, 2006

Have you read Purple Cow by Seth Godin?  Well it’s a great marketing book about the value of being remarkable.  It describes how remarkable companies/products have become household names with little/no advertising.

The idea is simple – early adopters “sneeze” (get excited about and tell their friends) about these great never-heard-of-products-or-services.  These friends see the quality of product x and then tell their own friends – and so on and so on until EVERYONE knows about it.

Think about what Digg is doing – it’s this same concept digitized.  Links and stories get submitted to this website, and then are reviewed in the incoming area.  With the whole “friends” concept users can see what people they know are digging.  This makes users more inclined to investigate content.  Once enough of these friend networks dig them up, they get pushed to the front page – then the general mass of users dig and comment on the link which makes it explode with popularity.

Incredible — I’ve been using Digg for years but its brilliance didn’t fully mesh for me until recently.  Its model of pushing quality content to the top is ground breaking to say the least and can be applied to so many other business models (not direct competition).

Can this concept be integrated into your business idea?  I do offer consulting services - so why not give me a call and we can chat about how your business can adopt systems like content promotion to generate more traffic and revenue for your website.
