Ether.com: Profit from your knowledge

May 14, 2006

Last week I found out about Ether.com from Mashable.com.  It’s a service that lets you bill for incoming phone calls, here is a blurb that was quoted on Mashable:

We all have something valuable to say. Whether you’re an accountant, a computer expert, a blogger, or a good gossiper, you can earn money selling what you say to others over the phone or through email…How much is your time worth? $75 an hour? $15 for 15 minutes? $30 per call? Whatever you like. People will only be able to call you when they’ve prepaid your rate.

Just like Pete, I was excited instantly about this service.  I know a few talented professionals that are looking for new ways to generate revenue.  Here are a few people I instantly thought of – I’ve told all of these people to get on this.  Hopefully these examples will give you an idea of how to utilize this service as well.

Knighthunter.com – Mike Sherlock is the owner and operator of this London Ontario based job website. Mike is a delegate between candidates and employers. He has a great amount of knowledge of whose hiring and who’s looking for work.

Would you pay for a chat with someone who knows where the jobs are? How about some resume advice from someone who reads hundreds of resumes every month? If you were looking to fill a large number of positions in your organization, would you want some high level advice from a well respected recruiter?

MattBrett.com – Matt is a very talented web designer, just check out his site and you will see his attention to detail. Not only does he make a good design, he is very knowledgeable in the ways of the web – you will see his has Flickr, Technorati, his Xbox 360 gamer score and many other content sources integrated into his site with a custom look and feel.

Would you pay for a one-on-one chat with Matt to learn some of his know-how? Would you pay for a quick chat with him to get an idea of the effort required to do some of the same techniques? Would you pay for him to look at some other web designers’ work to gauge their quality?

StevePavlina.com – Steve is a self-help speaker/blogger that talks about things like time management, alternate sleeping techniques, and finding your true path in life.

Would you pay for a one-on-one session with Steve for advice on life? How about ask for advice on topics he hasn’t covered?  What if you wanted to improve on an aspect of your life and didn’t know where to get started?  What if you wanted him to recommend some books to you?

So Whoop-there it is, these are sites that I see taking advantage of this service. This is a great way to generate honest revenue besides the most common way of plopping ads next to your content.  This also further re-enforces my belief that a person can make a living with just a laptop and a cell phone.

Now what about me? I’m not sure if I hold enough specialized knowledge to make any money from this — I may set it up and just see what happens!

  1. I’m curious to know whether or not you actually went ahead with this and your results. Or, if you know the results of anyone else who has tried this.

  2. I’ve recommended this service to all mentioned websites — no action yet from any of the 3rd parties.

However I’ve integrated Ether.com into my site. I make a little pitch at the end of every blog entry I do now trying to stimulate a conversation. My hope is that entrepreneurs are reading my site looking for ‘the next big thing’, or want to talk to someone who knows the technology I deal with.

So far no bites - but I’m confident it will catch on eventually.
